Cavaliers tie franchise record with 13th straight win

By  |

The win streak that has changed the Cleveland Cavaliers‘ season continued on Wednesday night, and it’s now a historic run for the three-time defending Eastern Conference champions.

Cleveland surmounted a 14-point deficit and rallied to beat the Sacramento Kings 101-95 at home to tie a franchise record with 13 straight victories.

LeBron James, who was part of the other two instances in Cavs history when they won 13 straight, did the most to ensure his team can go for No. 14 later this week by finishing one assist shy of a triple-double. James scored 32 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out nine assists.

He downed a pivotal 3-pointer to finish off the Kings, who ran out to a five-possession advantage in the third quarter. The shot came over fellow St. Vincent-St. Mary High School alum Jakarr Sampson.

Kevin Love scored 18 points and snared 13 rebounds, but like in the Cavs’ comeback win over the New York Knicks during this streak, Kyle Korver provided a fourth-quarter spark. Working with the suddenly surging second unit, Korver nailed three straight 3s — the last of which giving the Cavs an 82-79 lead early in the stanza.

Korver finished with 15 points (4-for-8 from long range), and Jeff Green added 17 off the bench.

The Cavs are now 18-7 after beginning the streak two games under .500. They are now back where they were at the conclusion of last regular season — in second place in the East behind the Boston Celtics.

This run matches 13-game surges from the 2008-09 team and the 2009-2010 squad, during James’ first go-round with his hometown team.

The Indiana Pacers are next on the Cavs’ schedule; that game tips off at 7 p.m. ET Friday night in Indianapolis.
